Our story begins over 30 years ago, when we worked side-by-side with agents to open up Blue Cross of Michigan from a captive distribution. We successfully opened BCBSM to all independent agents.  GRA became agents’ go-to resource as one of the first managing agents in the state.

From 1984 to 2012, we served agents’ needs in the individual, Medicare and group markets. At our high point, we paid commission to over 2,000 agencies.  Our services ranged from answering plan questions, training, claims assistance and forms processing.

In 2012, we felt the first damaging effects of the ACA on our industry. Not only were agents being swept under the rug, their support system was being dismantled. Our largest revenue source abruptly canceled our contract.  At that point, 40 employees were desperately wondering where their next paycheck would come from.   Our agency friends scrambled to figure out how they would continue without a support organization.

I began exploring our core competencies – I spoke with agent friends, rediscovered skills in my employees. We excelled at customer service and developing agency support tools. We had a strong team already in place, ready to continue working with agents and brokers. From my experience in the industry I knew there would be struggles if the slow elimination of agencies continued. I believed what agents did was extremely valuable to individuals and employers and needed a support system.

This led to a vision for improving agencies’ daily practices and developing a set of services to support it:
